The range is a ladder, and each step exists for a reason. The Lightweight II S.E. is the lightest and cheapest, built for blood pressure, routine screening and nursing work. The Classic III is the general-purpose standard: dual-sided, tunable on both sides, the model most students and family doctors buy and keep for years. The Cardiology IV raises chestpiece sensitivity and tubing quality for cardiology, internal medicine, emergency care and intensive care, and keeps a small paediatric side. The Master Cardiology drops the second side to concentrate everything into one large, highly sensitive chestpiece for adult-only practice. For newborns and children there are the Classic II Infant and Classic II Pediatric sizes, and the CORE Digital adds amplification and noise reduction when the environment or the patient makes listening hard.

How much should you actually spend?

Spend according to what you have to hear, not according to seniority. A student on placement and a nurse taking blood pressures are well served by a Lightweight II S.E. from 299 RON or a Classic III from 640 RON; the Classic III is the honest answer for almost anyone who examines adults and occasionally children, and the student bundles that pair one with a case start at 725 RON. Move up to the Cardiology IV, from 1,470 RON, when soft low-frequency murmurs, quiet lung fields or large patients are part of your daily work — the extra sensitivity is audible, not marketing. The Master Cardiology, from 1,505 RON, makes sense only if you never need a paediatric side. The CORE Digital, from 2,195 RON, is worth its price in noisy environments or with reduced hearing, not as a general upgrade.

What do the model codes and chestpiece finishes mean?

Every Littmann carries a four-digit code that identifies the exact combination of tubing colour and chestpiece finish — 5620 is a black Classic III, 5863 a navy one with a mirror chestpiece, 6177 a black Cardiology IV with a mirror finish, 2160 a black Master Cardiology. Within one line, all codes share the same acoustics: a mirror, smoke, champagne, copper or rainbow finish changes appearance and price, never sound. Choose on practical grounds instead. Dark and smoke finishes hide fingerprints and scratches and reflect little light in theatre; polished and mirror finishes stay striking but show handling marks; a distinctive tubing or stem colour is the fastest way to identify your own instrument in a department where a dozen identical black stethoscopes hang on the same hooks. Spare parts, however, follow the line and not the finish, so always order the kit by model.
