About Student package

What is in a student bundle and why buy it as a set?

Each bundle contains one Littmann Classic III stethoscope and a soft case in a colour chosen to match it. The reason to buy them together is simple: a stethoscope carried loose in a bag or coat pocket is the one that fails early. Keys and pens scratch the chestpiece, the tubing is forced into tight bends and takes a permanent kink, and the eartips collect lint that ends up in your ear canal. A case keeps the tubing in its natural curve, keeps the chestpiece clean and makes the instrument far harder to mislay in a shared locker room. The bundles run from 725 RON — the black 5620 with a black pearl case, the turquoise 5835 and grey 5621 with matching cases — up to 825 RON for the chocolate Classic III 5809 with a copper chestpiece.

Why is the Classic III the right stethoscope for a student?

Because it teaches correct technique and covers every rotation you will do. Both sides of the chestpiece have a tunable diaphragm: light pressure emphasises low-frequency sounds, firm pressure the higher ones, so you learn to control what you hear with your hand rather than by swapping instruments. The large side handles adults, and the small side works on children — and converts to a traditional open bell with the supplied non-chill sleeve, so you also learn what a bell sounds like. The single-lumen tubing keeps rubbing noise down, and the whole instrument is light enough to wear through a twelve-hour shift. It is sensitive enough for internal medicine, cardiology teaching and paediatrics placements, which is why many graduates keep it for years before upgrading. The only rotation it will not cover properly is neonatology, where a newborn chest needs the far smaller Classic II Infant head.

Which colour and chestpiece finish should you pick?

Acoustically it makes no difference at all — every Classic III in these bundles is the same instrument, and the price gap between 725 and 825 RON reflects the chestpiece finish, not performance. So choose for identification and durability. A distinctive colour such as plum 5831, turquoise 5835, raspberry 5806 or navy 5863 is the quickest way to spot your stethoscope among a dozen identical black ones on a ward round, and it discourages the accidental swap that happens in every teaching hospital. Mirror, champagne and copper finishes — 5863, 5861, 5864, 5809, 5960 — look excellent when new but show fingerprints and fine scratches with daily use, while plain black and grey hide both. Whatever you choose, write your name on the tubing or fit an ID tag, because in a teaching hospital an unmarked stethoscope left on a desk rarely stays there for a whole rotation.

Frequently asked questions

No. The stethoscope in each bundle is a standard Littmann Classic III, the same instrument sold on its own, identified by the same four-digit code such as 5620 or 5863. The bundle simply adds a matching case at a lower combined price than buying the two separately. Nothing about the acoustics, the tubing or the spare parts differs.

A Classic III will. Its large side handles adults, its small side handles children and converts to an open bell, and both are tunable, so you can chase low- and high-frequency sounds by varying pressure. The one exception is neonatology, where a newborn chest needs the much smaller Classic II Infant chestpiece to seal properly between the ribs.

Pick a colour nobody else in your group has, then add a name tag or write on the tubing with a permanent marker. Keeping it in its case when you are not using it helps as much as anything, because most swaps happen when two identical instruments are left side by side on a desk or a trolley.

Many years, if you keep hand gel, alcohol solutions and skin oils off it and store it uncoiled in the case. Tubing stiffens and cracks from repeated solvent contact and from being kept bent tightly, not from age alone. Wipe it with a 70% alcohol wipe when needed, never immerse it, and keep it out of hot cars and direct sunlight.
