Why keep a stethoscope in a case at all?

Because almost every stethoscope that dies early dies from storage, not from use. Carried loose in a coat pocket or a bag, the chestpiece is scratched by keys and pens, the tubing is folded into a tight radius and eventually keeps that kink, and the eartips pick up lint and pocket dust that later goes into your ear canal. A case holds the tubing in a wide, natural loop, keeps the chestpiece off other objects and keeps the eartips clean, which is basic hygiene as much as protection. It also solves a practical problem in shared workplaces: a stethoscope in a distinctive case on your desk is far less likely to be picked up by a colleague than a black one lying next to three identical black ones. At 89 to 129 RON, a case costs a fraction of the instrument it protects.

Which case fits which stethoscope?

Fit follows the size of the chestpiece and the bulk of the tubing, so match the case to the range rather than to the exact code. The PREMIUM Classic cases, from 89 RON in black, plum, red and pearl finishes and 99 to 109 RON for the light pink, purple, grey and brown pearl versions, are sized for the lighter Littmann models — Classic III, Classic II Pediatric and Infant, Lightweight II S.E. The PREMIUM Cardiology cases at 129 RON, in pearl blue and pearl red, are cut for the bigger and heavier chestpieces and thicker tubing of the Cardiology IV and Master Cardiology, and they are the ones to buy for an electronic CORE Digital too. A Cardiology chestpiece will not sit comfortably in a Classic case, and forcing it presses the rim against the zip.

How do you choose the colour and look after the case?

Colour is the one genuinely functional decision. Pick a shade that matches your tubing if you like the set to look deliberate, or deliberately pick a contrasting one if you work in a team where everyone carries the same model — you will find your own case on a crowded trolley in a second. Darker finishes hide the marks that a bag will inevitably leave; pearl finishes look smarter but show scuffs sooner. In use, put the stethoscope away with the tubing coiled loosely rather than pushed in under tension, and do not use the case as a hard container: it protects against scratches and pocket grit, not against a heavy impact. Wipe the outside with a damp cloth or a disinfectant wipe and let it dry open, so the lining does not stay humid.
